Excerpt: ... THERE was once a King, but where he reigned and how he was called I know nothing about. He had no son, only a daughter who was always ill, and no doctor could cure her; then it was prophesied to the King that his Daughter would eat herself well with an apple. So he made it known all over the kingdom, whoever brought his Daughter some apples with which she could eat herself well should marry her and be king. Now, a Peasant, who had three sons, heard of it; and he said to the eldest, "Go to the garden, take a basket full of those beautiful apples with the red cheeks, and carry them to the court. Perhaps the King's Daughter will be able to eat herself well with them; and then you can marry her and be king." The chap did as he was bid, and took to the road. When he had walked awhile he met quite a little Iron Man, who asked him what he had in his basket. So Hele, for that was his name, said, "Frogs' legs!" The little Man then said, "Well, so it shall be, and remain;" and then went on. At last Hele came to the castle, and had it announced that he had got some apples which would cure the King's Daughter if she ate them. At that the King was mightily pleased, and had Hele in court. Oh, dear! when he opened it, instead of apples, he had frogs' legs in the basket, and tbey were kicking about still. The King got into a great rage and had him kicked out of the house. When he got home he told his Father how he had fared. Then the Father sent his next son, whose name was Saeme, but it went just the same with him as with Hele. The little Iron Man met him very soon, and asked him what he had in the basket, and Saeme said, " Sow-bristles;" and the little Man said, "Well, so it shall be, and remain." When he arrived at the King's castle, and said he had apples with which the Kin...

July 16th.--After it had been whispered in the press for some time that the Emperor Frederick had left a diary which did not throw a very favourable light upon Bismarck, and that this was at present in the hands of the Queen of England, a second version of the story Berliner Boersenzeitung, evening edition of the 13th) is Sept. 2o, 1888 THE EMPEROR FREDERICK'S DIARY 191 now reproduced from the Matin and other French papers. This is to the following effect. During the lifetime of the Emperor William I. Prince Bismarck prepared a frank statement respecting the European situation and his own political views, which he handed to the Emperor, believing that the latter would survive his son, and that the document would thus pass direct, without any intermediary, from the grandfather to the grandson. Frederick ascended the throne, and found the Bismarck memorandum. All the efforts made by the Chancellor to recover possession of it were in vain, and on Frederick's death it was found that the document, which contained the most ...

Excerpt: ... ADDRESS OF THE PRESIDENT, Db. Cybus Adleb. Members of the American Jewish Historical Society: Ladies And Gentlemen: All persons who are anywhere assembled in the United States on this evening will remember that it is the anniversary of the birth of the man who declared that the government of the people, for the people and by the people could not perish. Every American honors the name of Abraham Lincoln. He was not only a great ruler but he was a great prophet. Our Society, which, though small in numbers is national in scope, has on its roll members from every section of the country. From East and West, South and North have we drawn workers, and each one, I am sure, cannot but recall that wonderful prophecy made by Lincoln when everything looked dark and full of desolation: "The mystic chords of memory stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearth-stone all over this broad land, 'will yet swell the chorus of the Union when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature." A few days ago when I was in Boston upon the occasion of the presentation by Mr. Jacob H. Schiff of a building for the Semitic Museum of Harvard University, I reflected whilst looking upon Bunker Hill Monument that this great mark of American liberty might not have been erected, or its erection would have been greatly delayed, had it not been for the patriotism and philanthropy of Judah Touro. Originally it was desired to collect, in some concrete form, the deeds of men like him, which called this Society into existence. Anyone who thinks that it is our intention to get together a body of men who would proceed to write histories, is not acquainted with the motives that actuated our founders. It was the more modest, yet absolutely n...

Excerpt: ... BANKING SYSTEMS OF THE WORLD CHAPTER I. BANKING IN THE UNITED STATES BEFORE THE NATIONAL BANK ACT. Before the adoption of the national banking system, nearly every system was tried at one time or another in the United States. The first bank of issue was a land bank, incorporated in Massachusetts in 1739. For six years previous there had been note issues by private persons, but this was the first real bank of issue. The capital was 150,000. The subscribers were to pay 40 shillings for each 1,000 subscribed and, for the remainder, pledge their lands in security. Three per cent interest was to be paid in bills of the bank or in commodities. Notes equal to the capital, and payable in twenty years, were issued. Governor Belcher opposed the scheme, but 49,250 of its notes were printed and 4,067 were put in circulation. Another bank, in the same year, was formed by wealthy merchants, who guaranteed the 120,000 of notes which were issued, and hence the notes were hoarded. The craze for issuing bank notes spread, and the Bubble Act of 1720 was in 1740 extended by the English Parliament to the colonies to check it. The banks were forced to liquidate, after resistance by them and the people. The opposition of the English government and the governors to colonial' bank money led to many quarrels between the governors and the legislatures. The people sided with the legislatures, and whole regiments said they would resign rather than discourage the use of bank bills. There was much excitement at the time; bitterness with the British government resulted, and in fact this may have been one cause of the readiness of the colonists to revolt thirty-five years later. During the revolution Congress and the states issued a paper currency that for a while ...

Excerpt: ... CHAPTER X. "The way is but short; away-- Abmado. While all must be conscious of the fearful infirmities that beset human nature, there are none so base as not to know that their being contains the seeds of that godlike principle which still likens them to their divine Creator. Virtue commands the respect of man, in whatever accidental stage of civilization or of mental improvement he may happen to exist; and he who practises its precepts i3 certain of the respect, though he may not always secure the protection of his contemporaries. As the Count of Leiningen walked down the rich and vast aisle of the abbey-church, his thoughts vacillated between the impressions produced by the prior, and his latent, but still predominant intentions. Ho might have been likened to one who listened to the councils of a good and of an evil genius; that exhorting to forbearance and mercy, and this tempting to violence by the usual array of flattery and hopes. While he brooded over the exactions of the community, which were founded on a legal superiority that was alike hurtful to his power and galling to his pride, its manner of thwarting his views, and its constant opposition to his supremacy in the valley, motives of enmity that were justly heightened by the dissolute and audacious deportment of too many of its members, the effect of all was secretly opposed by the image of Father Arnolph, surrounded hj the mild and noble characteristics of Christian virtue. Emich could not, though he fain would, chase from his imagination the impression of meekness, charity, and of selfdenial, that a long acquaintance with the monk had made, and which the recent interview had served both to freshen and to render more deep. But a spectacle was prepared to meet his eyes in the court of the convent, t...

Excerpt: ... ledge. On the death of their aunt, Miss Branwell, Emily returned home, and Charlotte accompanied her; but, after a short stay, retraced her steps to Brussels, in the month of January, 1842, as a teacher, at 16 a year, Towards the end of the year 1843, various reasons conspired to render it necessary that she should leave Brussels. During the year 1846, the three sisters published, through a London firm of booksellers, a volume of poems, some of them of great merit, especially those written by Emily. Charlotte was also this year engaged in writing her celebrated work, "Jane Eyre." The MS. being forwarded in July, 1847, to Messrs. Smith and Elder, the London publishers, they undertook to publish it. On its appearance, in October, the work created a great sensation in the literary world, and though it received a great meed of praise as a powerful and well-written work, many severe criticisms were pronounced against the author. For clearness and beauty of style, it may rank with the best prose of the age. Some circumstances induced her to take a journey, along with her sister Anne, to London, where she met many of the literary celebrities of the day. Soon after the publication of " Jane Eyre," she began to write her tale of " Shirley," in the opinion of many good judges, the best fruit of her pen. It is certainly a production of great pathos, and knowledge of the secret and subtle emotions of the heart. The character of " Shirley" is boldly and graphically delineated, whilst the gentle nature and sensibility of Caroline Helstone is pourtrayed in exquisite colours. The book, published in October, 1849, was, like its predecessor, successful, and brought large gains to its author. At the end of November, 1849, she again took a journey to London, where she met Mr....

Excerpt: ... MY MOTHER'S MEMORY. By H. T. Tuckerman. Oft from the azure depths, at twilight's verge, Pure fleecy clouds, as fairy lands, emerge--And round then-dewy forms the sunbeams pour Effulgent floods, as waves upon the shore; They rise all radiant o'er the airy isle, Till all, iu one bright flush of glory, smile. Thus, from the spirit's deep, blest visions rise--And, like the visitants of peaceful skies, Kindle sublimely, as Attention's eye Intently beams upon their majesty. Such are the fertile thoughts, which wake and spring Beneath the nurture of Devotion's wing--And such the holy throng, which gather where The soul dissolves, and whelms itself in prayer; And these attend, with ministry divine, When man pours forth his love at nature's shrine. And such, my Mother! is the thought of thee--A thought of joy, yet full of mystery. If, from the precincts of their sainted home, The ascended ones are suffered e'er to roam, Then art thou round me;--winged with mother's love, Thy spirit leaves its blissful rest above, In the still watchings of a seraph's care, To guard thy son, and gently guide him there! Happy the thought that thou art ever nigh, The guardian angel of my destiny! A NIGHT IN THE WOODS. By Wmiam I. Snellin." I Was once so unfortunate as to be benighted while hunting the buffaloe. I started early in the morning, though it was so cold that each particular hair of my whiskers accreted a portion of my vital moisture in the form of an icicle, and a stranger might have taken me for the Genius of Winter, direct from the North Pole, on a visit. Nevertheless, I kept on the even tenor of my way, though the temperature was lower than human charity, --confiding in my Indian mittens and hunting shirt. I wandered far into the bare prairie, which was spread around me like an ...

There was constant expectation for quite a while of finding in some well-preserved form the deposit or residuum on the sides of the bowl which the smoke would make in the receptacle which was used for holding tobacco, but only in one instance has there been such indications as would show at all conclusively that the pipe had been used for any great period of time. The tobacco and the cane and the stone, all found in great abundance in Kentucky, put readily into the hands of the smoker all the necessary things to provide him with a convenient, comfortable, and tasteful pipe for the exercise of the smoking habit. Many of the designs of these pipes are taken from Nature, but very many of them show the development of really artistic talent. DISCOVERIES IN KENTUCKY CAVES. Those familiar with archeological research in Europe will recall that through caves are found the most satisfactory evidences of the habits, food, and clothing of primitive man. These were used as places of abode or refuge, and from the debris and ash-heaps of the substrata of the cavern floors the antiquarian has acquired the most reliable information as to what manner of man he was, and how and when he lived. In the occupancy of caverns in America, there is no prehistoric period corresponding with the "Cave Period" of Europe.

Excerpt: ... Ru. XCVII. The Singing Of The Traditional Songs By The Antelope Priests. Sitting around the mosaic are the Antelope priests together with Lominakshu, the chief Snake priest. At the back of the mosaic and near the wall of the kiva stand the Antelope maid and the Snake boy, the former holding in her hands the batni, with vines and cornstalks; the latter holding in his left hand the Antelope tiponi and a rattlesnake in his right. the west of the middle of the mosaic, standing against the banquette. In the meantime Polihungwa had led the mana to the rear of the kiva by the east side, where he handed her the batni containing corn stalks, beans, melon vines, etc., which she clasped in front of her with both hands, and took a place by the side of and to the east of Choshnimtiwa. The eight Antelope priests present, together with Lomanakshu, Chief Snake priest, now assumed a sitting posture on the lower side of the sand mosaic in the form of a semicircle, the priests at each end facing each other across the mosaic. In addition, old blind (jomahoiniwa took up a position on the main floor of the kiva behind the fireplace, near the ladder, on the west side. The relative position of the priests, together with the position of the Snake youth and Antelope maid, may be seen in PI. XCVII). For a few moments there was no sound heard in the kiva, when, without warning, Polihungwa began in a low voice and in a rapid manner a prayer, a free rendering of which is somewhat as follows: Pai ita hahlaikahkango, shukaokahkango yep pawasionayani. IN the Jewish prayers there is an especial, exclusive and extensive blessing upon wine, which Funs in the following wise: --"Blessed art thou, O Lord our God, universal King, for the vine, and for the fruit of the vine, and for the produce of the field, and for the land of delight and goodness and amplitude which Thou hast been pleased to give as an inheritance to thy people Israel, to eat of its fruit, and to be satisfied with its goodness.' Then follow petitions for the divine mercy upon those who say the blessing upon Israel, God's people, and upon God's city, Jerusalem, and upon Zion, the dwelling-place of His glory, and upon His altar, and upon His temple. The blessing concludes with a prayer for speedy transportation into the holy city: "Bring us up into the midst thereof eftsoons, even in these present days, that we may bless Thee in purity and holiness. For Thou art good, and the Giver of good to all. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, for the land and for the fruit of the vine." This beautiful prayer,1 of which only the roughest sketch has been given here, has been said by pious Hebrews at every meal in which wine has been drunk from time immemorial. But upon wine alone has this honour been conferred. Those who drink Shecar, or water( or any other beverage except wine, say before their draught thus.much only: "Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, universal King, by whose word all things were made;" and after it, "Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, universal King, the C...

In the following report the species of Foraminifera found in the later Miocene of the Coastal Plain of the eastern United States are described or recorded. An attempt has been made to include all records of the Foraminifera reported from the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain from Alabama to New Jersey. The greater part of the previous work on the Miocene Foraminifera has been done by Dr. Rufus M. Bagg and is especially exhaustive with reference to the Maryland region. I have undertaken to go over the Maryland material on which Dr. Bagg worked and find that I do not agree with some of his determinations. For the most part, however, this report has been intended to add information in regard to the Miocene Foraminifera of the region farther south by a study of collections from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. The geologic formations represented by the collections on which this report is based are as follows: Choctawhatchee marl,1 Coee Mill, Jackson Bluff, and Red Bay, Fla. Duplin marl,2 Muldrows Mill, Mayesville, and Darlington, S. C.; Wilmington and Natural Well, N. C. Yorktown formation,3 Suffolk and Yorktown, Va.
